How videotape transfer pricing works:
The cost to transfer video tapes to a digital format depends on the amount of content on each tape, and how you choose to have the digital copies delivered. The type or format of video tape does not usually affect the cost. Most video tape transfer services charge in increments of 30 minutes of content, with the cost increasing after every additional half hour of video on a tape.
There’s a trick that those services don’t mention in their pricing menus: most video tapes run a few minutes longer than advertised on the box! A 60 minute tape actually holds about 62 minutes of content when full, a 120 minute tape can hold up to 124 minutes, and so on.
A little bit of time can affect the cost. How 5 minutes makes a big difference:
At Village Green Preservation, our base rate for video transfer includes 35 minutes of content per tape. That extra five minutes doesn’t sound like much, but it keeps your full video tapes from rolling up to the next pricing tier, saving you money. For example, a full 1-hour tape (at 62 minutes long) is charged as Tier 2 with us, a $20 cost. With a big-box store pricing, that extra 2 minutes pushes the price into Tier 3, costing you an extra $5 or more.
We also offer complimentary repair of broken tapes, and the option to skip recorded-from-TV video tapes and other types of content! Don’t want a transfer of that staticky 3-hour college football game from 1987? No problem, we’ll ask about your preferences ahead of time!
(The big-box will transfer everything you send, and charge you up to $40 for that football game!)
